Electro Lieder is a wildly expressive multimedia show blending classical and the avant-garde as art song is re-imagined.
Music by Schubert, Shostakovich, R. Strauss and Bartok, alongside new music from Vincent Giles and Mark Oliveiro who also guided new works from emerging composers Ichi Asato, Sree Maddur and Joel Wybrew.
In a continuous 55min experience, songs (German: lieder) are combined with new material and merged together with spliced and distorted electronic connective tissue. True to the nature of art song, voice, piano and poetry meet, and this is expanded upon with explorative live electronics and interactive digital visuals.
With this production’s inception being in the modern world following the Covid lockdowns in Sydney, these musicians could not help but be influenced by considerations of continuous night-time and possible dystopia. Yet, hope remains, with feelings of warmth and the sensation of light beautifully appearing in the cracks.
Electro Lieder is an experimental multimedia fusion, born of these musicians’ collective, artistic response to recent world experiences. Their craft allows them to draw on historical and culturally diverse experience as they connect the past to the present and allow for imagination of the future.

Performed by Brieley Cutting (piano), Judit Molnár (soprano), Eleanor Streatfeild (cello), Dan Lopez (violin), Mark Oliveiro (electronics), and Ichi Asato (electronics).
